Cuba

Cuba is an archipelago of islands, located in the northern Caribbean Sea, at the confluence with the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. The country is formed by the main island of Cuba, the Isla de la Juventud, and 4195 islets, for a total land area of 100 992 km2. The country is subdivided into 15 provincies and one special municipality (Isla de la Juventud). The closest countries are: Haiti, E.E.U.U., Jamaica and Mexico.

Cuba is the most populous island nation in the Caribbean. There is a population of 11.242.621, according to the last census. It has an average life expectancy of 78 years old, one of the highest of Latin America. The population of Cuba has very complex origins, with roots specially in the Iberian Peninsula and African Continent.
The official language of Cuba is Spanish.
There are high temperatures and lot of humidity in the Island. The average  temperature is between 24 ºC  and 34ºC.

The main Rivers in Cuba, Toa and Cauto, are found in the western region of the island . Underground caves like Megano’s Eye (Ojo del Mégano) in Santa Clara and emerged caves like Santo Tomás are found in Cuba. The development of stalactites and stalagmites proves  that Cuba emerged from water about 10.000 years ago.
A great  variety of marine species is found in the island, most of them live in its coral reefs. You can also find hutias, different kinds of bats, non-poisonous reptiles like the large community of crocodiles that lives in swampy areas, a very particular kind of frog named by Cubans “la rana pequeña del mundo” (world’s small frog), lots of insects and many species of mammals.

Cuban flora has more than 6500 species in seed's plants only, found especially in the woods. Cuban precious woods are very valuable too.

The main industries are: tourism, sugar, petroleum, tobacco, construction, nickel, cement, agricultural machinery, pharmaceutical industry, and others. Among the agricultural productions are found: sugar cane, tobacco, citrus , coffee, rice, potato, beans. The livestock production is also important.


The dominant religion in Cuba is Roman Catholicism, but other different protestant faiths are permitted such as: Pentecostalism, Evangelicalism, Jehovah' Witnesses, Presbyterianism, etc. Voodoo or santería is also one of the religions or practices recognized in the island. Others religions practices are Abakuá secret religion (only for men), Spiritualism, Judaism, and others.

The most famous musical styles in Cuba are Cuban Son, Guaguancó, Chachachá, Mambo, Guaracha and Danzón.

The most popular sports are: baseball, amateur boxing, volleyball, athletism and judo.

Cuban tipical Lunch

Rice, tubers, pulses, pork and tropical fruits are the main elements in meals prepared by Cubans.
